She was born in Joilet on April 14th, 1974. She used to sing at the church choir when she attended it strictly 4 times a week with her grandmother. She graduated from Academy of Scholastic Achievement in 1992 and won a rap contest that lead her into rapping industry. She released her first album in 1994 named Funkdafied.

As mentioned above, she has won many awards and has been a nominee for many awards as well. At the Grammy Awards, she was nominated for the award of Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for “Not Tonight” Remix in the year 1998, whereas in 2004, she got the nomination for Best Female Rap Solo Performance for Got It Poppin.

At the award ceremony of Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards, she won the award for Best Rap Album in the year 1995. At the BET Awards, she got nominated twice for the award: Best Female Hip-Hop Artist in 2001 and 2004.

At the Billboard Awards, she won the award for Top Hot Rap Artist in 1994, Top Hot Rap Single for her work on “Funkdafied” in the year 1994, Top Hot Female Rap Artist in the year 1995.

At the same awards, she has been nominated for Top R&B Artist Female in 1994 and Top Hot R&B Single Sales in the same year for her work on Funkdafied.

She has made a few appearances in Films and TV serials. She was credited in Kazaam as Shawntae Harris / Cameo in the year 1996. In Rhyme & Reason she made an appearance in the year 1997. In the film Glitter, she was given the role Louise in the year 2001.

Again in 2001, she narrated in a film Carmen: A Hip Hopera. In the 2002 movie Civil Brand, she played the role of Sabrina. In the movie 30 Days, she played the lead role that was of Camisha, in the year 2006.

She appeared in a television series All That in 1994 as a Musical guest for its Season 1, Episode 2. She appeared in 2 episodes of The Parent ‘Hood and played the role of Boo in the years 1997 to 1998.

She was Baby K2K in one episode of Sabrina, The Teenage Witch in the year 2002. She played Jezzy in the Empire in the year 2015, in episode 10 of its season 2.
