Early Life

September 6 born Cara Carleton was raised in her home town Austin, Texas, United States, and is currently 66 years old. Her father was a professor at the University of Texas, Department of Law, and later the dean of Duke University, School of Law.

He later served as a judge for the US Court of Appeals. Carleton’s mother was an expert in abstract painting. She is believed to have English-German-Episcopalian ancestry. Carly attended five different schools in many places including London and Ghana. She has an immense interest in playing piano and received a Bachelor’s degree in medieval history and philosophy from Stanford University.

In 1980, Fiorina received an MBA degree in marketing from the University of Maryland. After nine years, she bagged a Master’s degree in Science from MIT Sloan School of Management.

Carly Fiorina started her career as a secretary in Kelly Services in 1976. After dropping out from the ULCA School of Law in the same year, she worked as a receptionist for six months in Marcus and Millichap and later promoted to a broker position. After marriage, she relocated to Italy and worked as an English Translator for Italian Businessmen alongside her graduate studies.

Carleton joined AT &T as a trainee during her management course. Within a matter of ten years in 1990, she was promoted to the position of senior vice president for the hardware and system department and later heading the North American operations department.

In 1995, she led the operations section in Lucent Technologies and was made the President of the consumer section the following year. In 1999, Carly was hired as the CEO of HP Technologies and made major moves during her tenure. She laid off 30,000 US employees which her supporters feel saved the company and benefited 80,000 other employees.

In 2002, Carleton was an active member of the major merger of rival company Compaq with HP. She was fired from the Chairman’s post after a disagreement in the boardroom meeting in 2005. In 2008, Carleton acted as the advisor for John McCain’s Republican Party. She lost the general election for senatorship to Barbara Boxer.
